Will yoga help with my fibromyalgia
and degenerative disc problems?

Sylvia: I have fibromyalgia and I was wondering if yoga will help. I also have degenerative disc problems in my neck and back. I have put on 15 pounds and eat fairly well but cannot seem to lose it. The doctor said its because I can’t exercise. So…will yoga help? Thanks for your help

Susan: I know it can help you! I know of quite a few women who have suffered with fibromyalgia and have been helped quite a bit through a yoga practice. I’m sure it can help you as well. Just start gently and slowly and be as consistent as possible. It would be good to do yoga about three times a week.

As far as the disc problems in your spine, I would suggest you talk with your doctor about what is good for you and where you should be careful. Yoga can be adapted to your level of ability and you can do it…just really listen to your body and go gently and slowly into the poses. The yoga will increase your flexibility and bring fresh, oxygenated blood to your discs, and help to heal them.

Personally, I have had some wonderful results with a chiropractic method called The Gonstead Method. It has healed a herniated disc in my spine and can be very powerful as far as healing the discs. You may want to explore the possibilities for yourself.

I hope this helps! I’m sure if you get your body moving again, the weight problem will take care of itself.
