Bronwyn: I am 55 taking a yoga class and one or two days after the class I have burning in by shins. I studied ballet for years and have not danced in 30 years and considered myself in fair shape, however this burning in my shins concerns me. Should I be having this burning in my shins?
Susan: I’m sorry to hear that you’re having problems with your shins while doing yoga. There can be a number of reasons for this issue.
It may be caused by keeping your weight too far forward on your foot, or by having your ankles pronated inward or rolled too far outward causing your weight to be distributed unevenly on your feet. This would put too much pressure on the front of your lower leg…on your shins.
It may also be that your lower leg muscles are weak, so the muscles around the shin are compensating.
Here are some suggestions for exercises that will strengthen the area:
- Walk across the room on your heels two to three times a day, then increase the repetitions gradually.
- Draw the alphabet with your toes. Be sure to do this both both feet.
- Flex and point your toes until you shins get tired. Build up to more repetitions gradually.
You should be able to feel all of these exercises in your shins.
I hope this helps! Please let me know how you’re doing, and don’t let this issue discourage you from doing yoga! It can be overcome!
