Eden: Hi Susan, I am looking for a great senior/restorative class in NYC for my mom who is generally in very good shape, but not a yogi, and is 78 years old. I wondered if you have any suggestions of specific teachers who cater to this group? Thank you so much!
Susan: There are lots of great classes and wonderful yoga teachers. You can locate many of the yoga studios and teachers through the internet to find them in your own area, and I would start with yelp.com. Yelp offers testimonials that are generally quite reliable, and very personal. You can also search anusara.com to find a teacher near you. I highly recommend an Anusara trained teacher. I also recommend an “vinyasa style class, or “flow yoga”.
Most yoga studios have classes for beginning yoga students, gentle yoga and senior yoga, so you can call your local studio or check out their website to see what is offered there. Also check with your local YMCA and health clubs. Some teachers may offer classes in your home, so be sure to include teachers in your search.
I’d suggest shopping around for a teacher who inspires you. It is important to find an instructor with whom you feel comfortable, safe and confident. Every teacher is different and has their own particular style of teaching, so find the teacher that’s right for you. That’ll make it easier for you to enjoy your practice and keep coming back for more.
Wishing you blessings on your yoga path.
