Judie: I have a slight sciatic nerve problem and once it is there, it takes me quite a while to recover from the nerve being too sensitive. Is this going to interfere with my beginning the yoga tapes? I don’t want to do more damage but I want to get in better shape and feel if I can get this started it may cure the problem.
Susan: I can sympathize with your sciatica…I’ve had similar issues, and yoga can help. However, it depends on the cause of the nerve irritation as to what yoga poses may help or hurt.
Since I don’t know what your issue is, its difficult for me to make a determination as to what is best for you. That would be a question for your doctor.
I can tell you that yoga helps to lengthen the spine, and that can relieve compression and nerves being pinched.
When you do your yoga, be sure to be very aware of your body and the messages it sends. Be gentle with yourself and take it at your own comfortable pace.
Please check with you doctor before beginning yoga and find out the cause of your problem, then you can be aware and sensitive to what will be most healing for you.
